First thing I like to do when working with a new client is to get a download of all the thoughts rattling around in their head.
Together we get really curious and examine their mind.
We question everything. We question what we think is true. And we look at all their negative thoughts.
Usually, the client is eager to feel better and get to the new, shiny, positive thoughts.
But it doesn’t work that way.
You can’t go from negative thoughts to positive thoughts.
Those thoughts will have no staying power and you’ll be back in your dirty diaper quickly.
You have to pass through neutral.
- Write down the negative thought you currently have…this place is crazy, I can’t work here anymore
- Write down the positive thought you want to have…I like working here
- Ask yourself, ‘is there a thought somewhere in between that’s more neutral?’
- Find a neutral thought… those tend to start with phrases like ‘it’s possible that… I can like working here.’
Practice the neutral thought until you really believe it.
Passing through neutral helps us get to the positive thought because the gap between the thoughts is much smaller. This is how you change your thoughts. And ultimately your results.
Examine your thoughts. Question everything you are thinking.
Ask yourself ‘what’s possible?’
